Time to upgrade the memory
The need of a memory upgrade comes about by the use of the system. Each application that runs on the system takes up a part of the memory. Hence when more applications are run on the system the system slows down. If the system is found to be running slow or the CPU process are not executed fast enough, a memory upgrade may be required for faster performance. Around 512 MB to 1GB is needed for working over networks, Word application documents etc. For applications such as multimedia editing and high performance gaming, greater value of DDR2 RAM is configured on the system. The RAM and memory can be supported by means of dedicated graphics video memory.
The amount of memory the computer can handle
The amount of memory that a computer can handle depends upon a couple of factors. One is the operating system upon which it performs. If the system runs on Windows XP then it is a 32 bit operating system and hence the maximum value of memory it can hold is 4 Gigabytes. Certain amount of the memory is reserved by the operating system. When using a 64 Bit operating system we can use 8 gigabytes of memory. The memory that a computer can handle also depends upon the number of slots that are present on the motherboard. The user manual of the motherboard must also be checked before an upgrade is done.
The Toshiba Qosmio X500 has a CPU that has a built-in Northbridge. There are four physical RAM slots that work on the phenomenon of DUAL CHANNEL; therefore we can see the current RAM configuration to be 2+1+2+1. Each channel should have similar RAM configurations, else we can replace them by putting in a 4GB memory stick to upgrade to a maximum of 16GB RAM. The memory upgrade should be compatible with the memory that is configured on the motherboard.
