Upgrade Windows® XP in Toshiba® Satellite U500
The Toshiba Satellite U500 notebook delivers exceptional graphics and performance. Windows XP has been released in several editions after its original release. If you are upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, then you need additional storage space to store the important files and folders. If you are planning to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, you do not need additional storage space because Windows 7 provides an easy transfer option to transfer the files and folders. If you have the installation disk, insert the disk into the disk drive and run the setup. If you have downloaded the Operating System from the Internet, then the setup might start on its own. On the Windows install page, choose the ‘Install now’ option and accept the terms and conditions. Then follow the instructions to install the upgraded Operating System.
- Data backup
- Clean installation
- Hardware compatibility
You should make a backup of your files or save them to a safe location, before upgrading. You can backup your files using Windows Backup, or any other backup software. It is important to have the current backup of your important data before making significant changes to your Toshiba Satellite U500 to avoid data loss. You can copy the important data to a network folder, burn the data to a CD or DVD or create a backup of them onto an external hard disk.
If Windows XP has no direct upgrade path to upgrade to Windows 7, you will need to perform a clean installation by formatting Windows XP or installing it on a different hard drive partition keeping Windows XP and Windows 7 in dual boot mode. In order to do this, first perform the Windows XP to Windows Vista upgrade then Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade.
You need to check the hardware compatibility of your Toshiba Satellite U500. Go to the Upgrade Advisor on the official website of Microsoft. You can also run the Windows Upgrade Advisor during the upgrade by clicking ‘Check compatibility online’ on the ‘Install Windows’ page. The minimum system requirements for upgrading from Windows XP are a 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit), 1 GB of RAM (32-bit); 2 GB of RAM (64-bit), 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit); 20 GB of available disk space (64-bit) and DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or a higher driver.
