When to upgrade graphics card in the notebook?
Digital photography needs of graphic designers, video editors may prompt them to upgrade to a graphic card that can support features such as 3-D or true color or dual graphics that may not be supported by their current graphics card. In addition installation and use of certain application and operating system software will require a fast performing graphics card with particular graphical output that is not available in the current card. Changing user needs i.e. gaming and entertainment will drive the user to change to a better performing video card than the default one. A change in technology has seen certain hardware devices i.e. projectors, monitors have better graphical performance than the previous versions. This may result in incompatibility with the video driver that is in use forcing the user to switch to a better graphics card.
Issues with upgrading graphics card
The first hurdle that the user is likely to face is that the notebook’s graphic card comes soldered onto the motherboard. In addition, it is not a guarantee that motherboard will support the new card and in most cases, the motherboard chipset will not permit or be compatible with the new hardware. The notebook unlike a desktop computer does not have expandable graphic slot to add a new video card. In a case where a user has gone through the trouble to replace the motherboard to suit the new card, the result may be over heating of the laptop. This is caused by the CPU requirements of the hardware causing the CPU to work overtime.
Instead of upgrading the video card, one can try and use external Express Card interface card, which is connected to the USB port.
