Boot Toshiba® NB300 laptops with a bootable USB
Explore various benefits of using a bootable USB to install an Operating System in Toshiba NB300.
A USB that contains a full Operating System which can be booted is called as a live USB. It is a USB flash drive or a USB external hard disk drive. Windows 7 can be used from a live USB. Toshiba NB300 is a mini notebook computer from Toshiba, which can be booted up from a USB. When you choose to download most of the software from the Microsoft Store, you have the option to download it from the browser. When you download the ISO file, you must copy the file onto a USB flash drive to install Windows 7. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port for installing Windows 7 and then run set-up.exe from the root folder. There are both benefits and limitations for booting from USB. The major advantage is that you can change the data contained on the booting device, hence it can be used as a personal storage. The Word personal storage means that one can carry their preferred Operating System, applications, files and configuration with them. Because of this advantage it is easy to share a single system between multiple users. The disadvantage is that USB devices typically achieve lower data transfer rates than internal hard drives.

- Limitations of booting from USB
- Two step installation of Windows 7 from USB
Benefits of booting from USB
The major advantage is that it is simple to install. It provides the additional benefit of enhanced privacy because the user can carry it to anywhere and can be stored in a secure place. It reduces the opportunities for others to access the data. By using the second type of Live USB, it is possible to encrypt the whole system. With the user’s preferred Windows Manager and applications they are easier to customize.
Limitations of booting from USB
With booting from USB it is difficult to update or install applications that are not part of the original image. The live USB installation is possible only if the Operating System i.e. Windows 7 supports it. Because of the additional read/write cycles that occur on a full blow installation the life time of flash drive will get reduced.
Before installation the required components are USB flash drive(4GB minimum), Windows 7 ISO Image file, Windows 7 USB/DVD tool. The first step is to insert the USB drive into Toshiba NB300, run Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, and select Disk Image as ISO. Browse the local drive for the downloaded Windows 7 ISO and open it by clicking. The second step is to select 'Type' as USB and choose the drive. Once these procedures are done a window will appear that is much similar to a screen shot then click ok and it will begin extraction of files. Once installation is complete reboot the system.
