What is formatting?
Formatting is a process of preparing a disk or a storage medium. It is done to set up an empty file system. Multiple file systems can be set up in a disk by making partitions and formatting those for that file system. There are many programs and utilities for this formatting task. There are two levels of formatting that are low and high level of formatting. Low level formatting makes the permanent foundation of a disk, and it is often done in the factory. High level formatting is done during installation of the operating system.
When do you need to format?
When you will want to store data in a hard disk or a storage medium, then you need to format the disk. Low level formatting is done in the factory. Through the low level formatting, the surface of the disk is marked with sector numbers to be used at the later time. High level formatting will be needed, when you will go to install the operating system to the hard disk. Sometimes you may need to clean viruses from the hard drive by formatting the hard disk.
Up to this time, about all the systems formatting processes are same. You have to format the disk before installing the operating system. For this you will need the disk of the operating system. Insert the disk into the disk drive and restart the operating system. After starting the system, press the required key as instructed in the manual of the computer or operating system to go to the BIOS. After that set the booting device from where the computer will boot. Save and exit from the BIOS, then perform the steps instructed to finish the formatting successfully as advised by the computer system.
