Connect to the right port
First thing you should do is to connect one end of the VGA cable to the VGA port on your Toshiba Satellite A500 and the other end to the monitor. Some monitors have both VGA and DVI ports, so make sure that you are connecting it to the right port. A few monitors have only DVI inputs, so you must ensure that the one you are using does have VGA. Now turn on your computer and you will see a picture on the laptop’s screen.
Instructions for connecting an external monitor
Press and hold the ‘Function’ key and at the same time press the ‘hotkey’ with the picture of the monitor on it. This usually varies, but on Toshiba Satellite A500 it is ‘F5’. Now go to ‘Graphics Properties’ and this will take you into the screen that sets up the dual monitors. Then you should select ‘Extended Desktop’ to have your display stretch across both monitors. The ‘Clone’ setting shows the identical display on both monitors.
Unless the monitor is detected or setup in the operating system, it might not work accurately or will only display at the default resolution. If you wish to modify the resolution of the external display, make certain that the monitor is detected. This can be done by checking in the Windows ‘Device Manager’ and ensuring that the monitor is listed there.
